Jumping out of gear
Hi all, Is it just a coincidence that since I fitted the Quick Release Rod Change Gear Selector Coupling (MSG13) that my daughter's 1988 Designer decides to jump out of second fourth and reverse gears. Second and fourth only when slowing down reverse when moving very slowly. Interesting to note that all three gears being at the bottom or rear half of the gate. If it is not the new part can anyone throw any light onto what might be causing this problem. Engine has been removed form the car and block and transmission casing have been separated but nothing has been done to the gearbox itself. The engine was given a good overhaul and everything put back together and back in the car with no problems. Regards Paddy

Hi all, I searched the web regarding this problem and found a solution on another Forum (in USA). When I replaced the gear selector oil seal and bush I also replaced the rubber bellows that go between the rear of the diff housing and the Gear Rod Selector Coupling (MSG13). I found that the rubber bellows are slightly longer and harder to compress compared to the original. I removed the new one and replaced it with the original and I no longer have the problem of jumping out of any of the gears. The extra length and extra stiffness was just sufficient to stop the selector rod from travelling it's full distances when selecting those three gears therefore they were not fully engaged. Fortunately the old rubber bellows were still in good condition, but if they were not the solution would be to cut the new bellows to the same length as the original. The extra stiffness should not be a problem.
Hope this helps others.
Regards Paddy
