Door check panels
Hi All,
Just wondering if any of you came across any difficulies in fitting replacement check panels or have experienced fitting one.
I was a bit perplexed when I received the panels as it appears that these do no leave the extra lip needed to fit the door rubber seal.
Any ideas will be very much appreciated. I am so lost with these panels.
Regards
Nick

Hi Nick,
What do you mean by "door check panel"? It is not a term I am familiar with. Do you have a part number or link to the web page for the item you purchased as it would help us understand the problem a little more. Please also tell us your vehicle model and year of manufacture as doors vary greatly between the mk2 - mk3 bodyshell and also later ones with internal stiffening bars.

lamp
Check the fuses and check to see if you are getting power to the door hinge push button - the switch that turns the lamp on when you open the door. These can get a bit gummed up as behind there is a favorite place to rust. The wires to this run along the bottom dash rail before going through a couple of grommets. Armed with a torch, its easy enough to find them.

Re.
Check your door rubbers, watch around the door stay area with an assistant waving a hose around outside. also check side opening windows if you have them and my old favorite the rear lights as the water finds its way to the front floor pans quite easily from these and the filler neck. Sometimes you get leaks though the engine bay around the heater pipes and master cylinders if you don`t have the bonnet seal in place, also check its not your heater matrix ( antifreeze) Good luck!

Wing mirror
Bad luck dude, wouldnt you love ten minutes in a room with the little scrotes that do this? Anyway...under the mounting arm part of the mirror should be a little cover that will pop open with a thin screwdriver, the bolts that hold the mirror on are under here. I would take the mirror off first and check the door - see if the threaded insert in the door looks OK. Then whilst its off, give the mirror a check over. If all is OK just put it back on. If ther mirror is damaged I would suggest getting any old matching cooper one and painting it up, put in the effort for the prep work and no-one will be able to tell. If the door is damaged, I dunno, get it to a mini-friendly garage. I see you are in Brighton - check us out at www.brightonminiclub.co.uk

respray
Id say around £800 to £1000 would be a fair price for a tidy profesional job aslong as the car is reasonably sound, thats allowing for rust in the usual places i.e: a-panels,scuttle,front panel, rear valance etc,but expect to pay quite a bit more if the doors, boot floor, inner 1/4 panels and floor need work.best to ask someone with experience of restoring minis to check it over before you start spending on it because more often than not its a cheaper option to use the money you would spend on the body to buy a much newer mini, hope this advice is helpful

leaks
If you can see the road through a hole in the sill, then this is certainly a good culprit for a leak. Other places are dodgy door seals and holes around the fresh air vents in the bulkhead. Also check your heater matrix isnt leaking.

leak
where the air vents are it is prone to rust around the door hinge so check that out as this can let water in try putting dinitrol down on the floors to stop the moisture and have you checked the windscreen seal

Door Wont close properly
Check your hinges, also open your door up fully and look at the door from the inside at the gap between the door and where it attaches. My sisters wouldnt shut and we found out the edge of the door was snapped.

door removal
you need to unbolt the doors from behind the a panels. spray with penetrating oil the day before, and note where the spacers are, and refit them from where they were removed. dont forget to take the pin out of the door check, but you can remove all the bolts with the door shut, open the door and lift away.

advice
Door will fit with a little fiddling. All mini doors need a certain amount of shimming/aligning to get the gaps right. Can't be sure, but you may find the mirror mounting is different though. Just check the bottom of the new door, it's a common rust trap on minis.

re
Check the water isn't getting in through the rubber seal that goes around the door. Also check the windscreen and have a good scrape around the roof gutter at the corners because they rust forming holes. Even if you cant see them at first they may be there.

new alternator and battery cable problems in sweden
thanks for getting back mate,
but, I really need to check about that alternator as I can't remember if my mini is a 96 or a 97..
And yes, I ran a set of 10 inch subs in the boot with speakers in the doors and under the backseat so the more power one can muster the better...

Any advice for a total newcomer?
with the doors remove the inside door card and block the drainage hole with tape, fill the bottom section of the door with wax oil then remove the tape, catch the remaining wax oil make sure the drainage holes are unblocked, check the door skin is well sealed. check the door window seals these can come away from the window letting in water.

sill jacking point removal
Thanks for the info Barry. True, spot welding is faster and neater so taking the door step out is maybe worth it. It was a pain welding in that space while lying on my back. I didn't bother bracing in the end, I only cut an 8 by 8 square from the inner sill, leaving of course the door section in place, so only movement would have been up or down which I checked before welding in the patch. Next step, I'll cut off the outer sill and order a new one, plus the jack support bracket. With the inner sill in place, I shouldn't imagine the mini deforming without it's outer sill. I'll plug weld the jack bracket from the inside of the car. Hope this is interesting for someone maybe wanting to tackle this themselves, thats why I've put in the photos.

water in footwells
No the seats won't cause a leak unless they are drilled thru the bottom of the car. You should check the skin on your door and see if it has separated from the door. You can always get your door reskinned. I bought a car with a pool of water in the front of the passenger seat and behind it. The carpet kept it hidden and when I removed the carpet I found that my door was rotted. The rain comes in thru the area where the window goes thru the door. Because the rain comes in there it will rust out the bottom and also the window winder. I just lost my window because of the same problem that caused my door to rust. I wish there was an easy fix to stop the water from going into the door.

££££
Check its not full of filler, usual places to check are... A panels (between the wing and the door, triangle shaped panel) Door bottoms Under the headlamps Boot floor Scuttle (the panel the wipers are on/go through) Get under it and scrub oil/dirt off the subframes and check the condition of them Engine checks are the normal ones - check for mayonaise under the oil cap, start from cold and check for any smoke from exhaust, blue = oil burning, white = water burning (steam) black = BAD! If any of the above looks bad or like it is on its way out, it will cost money to fix, if its all good then I think (just my opinion) it is worth £1100 - £1300 max. If you have a local mini club maybe try and see if someone will go with you to check it over?

Door Wont Shut....
You'll find this: -
Door Check Strap MKIII Mini Spares link
But what dash have you got fitted James? I doubt there's much point in removing the carpet, those door check strap arms are about level with the air-vents.
