choke
This sounds pretty normal to me. I dont think its an issue with automatics specifically. An a-series usually needs some choke to get started and it depends how much your car cools down as to whether youll need it to start again after work.

Choke
Depends on the climate where you live. I have an auto. I use choke a lot in winter but never in summer. Also, dont forget to keep the carb topped up with oil. Sometimes when my engine has been cutting out on idling i put some oil in the carb and presto! no more problem.

Maybe it is a problem of the idle speed adjustment on the carb. Increase it a bit and see what happens. Or there could be some gunge somewhere in your carb - maybe it needs dismantling and cleaning out inside.

A question of chokes
When I got my Mini, it had no carb. I bought myself a brand new HS4 carb and proceeded to connect it up as best I could. Unfortunately Id never done this before and decided to simply take the line of figure it out as I go along. While I realise now this was a mistake, Im not really any closer to having a well running car. Ive connected it up as best I could, but Im having some choke difficulties. Im not sure if, when connecting the choke cable, the lever on the side of the carb should sit slightly forward, or sit in its resting position. In the resting position the car wouldnt start at all, but with it slightly forward, its running rich and misfires slightly. Ive adjusted what Im informed is the mixture nut (copper nut that runs on a thread on the spindle for the jet underneath the carb) but this seems to have no particular effect. I feel like Im almost there but theres just something Im missing here. Im a bit of a novice when it comes to setting up SU carbs (its so much easier with DCOEs, with a different screw for everything) so any advice on setting them up from scratch would be greatly appreciated.

Choked
As far as chokes are concerned, the cam on the carb should not be under any load when the choke is fully pushed in. If the can doesnt start like this (as most minis wont do) pull the choke out. Not sure about the mixture stuff though. I use HIF44s as they are less prone to problems.

Car won't run without choke...
Hi, 1275 with HIF 38. I regularly switch between leaded 110 race fuel and 95 unleaded (car is autocrossed about twice per month). Last week I ran out my last bit of race fuel and filled up with 95 and within 60 seconds, the car started skipping and missing. I pulled the choke out half way, and it runs pretty much as normal. When not choked, the idle speed varies as much as 500 rpm, and will eventually shut off. It smooths out with the choke. I need the choke through the RPM range. I have pulled the plugs, checked the vacuum hose and plugs on the carb, blown out the fuel line, checked the fuel filter, and tightened the manifold (inlet and exhaust) nuts. Any ideas? As stated earlier, I routinely make the switch between fuels and this is the first time Ive had a problem (coincidence?). I have even checked and adjusted the rocker clearances. Timing? Internal carb issue? Help - Please!? Vince

Won´t run without choke
Could also be dirt partly clogging the jet. Cheers, Diddi

sticky choke
Hi all the choke cable in my flame 998 is a bit stiff, with the effect that the switch plate it is mounted on (with the rocker switches) keeps popping out of its hole. how does the switch plate clip in? (as its movement certainly does not make the passage of the choke cable any easier) also, does anyone know the likely cause of the stiff choke cable (which was replaced last january) and how to loosen it up? many thanks Rich

Drop the heater or better still take it out all together. Get your head where the heater was (take the seats out as well maybe) and you sould be able to locate the two nuts that hold the panel in place. Once you know where they are you may be able to do it blind (but I doubt it). Now you can release the panel and make a good job of securing the choke cable to it. I find try ing to secure the choke cable to the panel in situ always fails because you cannot do the nut up tight enough.

Try shoving some WD40 down the cable from the carb end, It seems to cure most Sticky/stiff things....for a while anyway... Roy

sounds like a vacume leak!!! this would make the mixture week, fixed by using choke, which make mixture rich????

Broken Choke
Hi guys,
i have a 1275cc 89 mini and my friend broke the actual choke assembly. I have been looking at it today and i figure i may aswell replace the cable too as its pretty old, but i dont know what parts i would need specifically.
He broke it in a strange place (at the back) he actually broke the metal holding the cable in place.
Thanks for any help
- David

You should need a complete cable inner & outer, they are fun to fit especially if you have hands like shovels like me! undo the cable at the carb end first, try not to loose the cable pinch bolt...then inside the car two nuts secure the panel from behind the light switch panel, 8mm i think, then just draw it forward......its been a while since i have done this but i think its explained in a haynes manual. do make sure that you lubricate the new cable before you fit the new one.

Thanks thats very good to know, do you know where i can find the actual ?bolt? where the choke cable goes to the handle? My friend broke that so the choke handle is useless.

You will get a new handle which will be attached to the new inner cable, you will also get a new nut and locking washer to fix the outer cable to the switch panel end, as for the bolt you mentioned, the only bolt on the choke is the pinch bolt that secures the inner cable at the carb end, if you need to replace this you will need to visit a scrapyard....good luck with finding one!!

HS4 Choke Linkage.....
Hi all, Clair had a bit of a catastrophe earlier today..... The spring clip, that holds the choke actuator rod onto the jet assembly has popped off, causing the jet to fall down under its own weight, and make the car splutter to a halt, in a huge cloud of black smoke! Anyway, she managed to get it sorted at the roadside by using one of the laces from her work boots (she drives in her trainers, so they were in the back!), by tying the jet up, just to get her home. Now, I got the job of repairing it after tea, which is no major problem... but, one question: Does the ball on the end of the rod make contact with the upper or lower side of the lug on the jet assembly?.... If I put it on the underside, it could be potentially too lean, and if I put it on the topside, then it could potentially be too rich..... Does anybody know? if you dont, and you have an HS4 equipped car, any chance you can pop outside and have a look for me? Cheers, James

Yes, thats the kitty..... Cant tell from the exploded diagram in the manual, where it should be though! Cheers, James

As mine is off the car at the moment I can see quite clearly that the ball sits below the bracket thingy.
Good luck!
