Clutch slave cylinder
I have replaced the seal of the clutch slave clinder and now can only get the piston part way in. the new rubber seal get through but then it doesn't go any further.
Does anyone have an top tips?
Its a 1997 Cooper with Verto clutch. I'd tried to speed up the replacement by not removing the cylinder from the car so it still in situ.
Gratful for any help!!

You should lubricate the new seal with brake fluid before you insert it. You also need to be extremely careful that the seal doesn't get twisted as you push it in. If you've done that, and it makes no difference, it's always possible you've got the wrong seal....

thanks will try to take the ting out tonight and get a proper look at it!! don't want to make a mess of the drive though
sounds like the better option is to swap it for new clylinder.

taking it out was a much better option and i managed to coax the seal in place with a blunt screw driver with a latex gloves over it and it slipped in with no effort. SORTED!

It would be a Verto clutch, so you would need a slave cylinder to match.

Clutch slave cylinder leak
As I was removing the clutch/flywheel cover on my car and withdrawing the push rod from the slave cylinder, some clutch fluid leaked out.
Do you know if this is normal or are the seals/piston knackered?

If it's only a few drops then it's not too serious, any more than that and it means the seals have gone and for the few pounds it costs it's worth replacing the entire thing.

Clutch slave return spring
I noticed my pre verto clutch is not fitted with a return spring from the clutch arm to the slave cylinder. The clutch functioned ok but when i purchased the spring from minispares and installed it the clutch felt incredibly heavy and sitting in traffic was impossible so i removed it. Is this spring essential and any ideas why this happens? Am i doing any damage by not having this fitted?
Thanks,
Jake

I think if you don't have that spring there is a danger if you pump the pedal several times in quick succession that you will over-pressurise the system. However, it shouldn't make the clutch feel heavy - is it the right one and do you have the right attachments at each end?

I purchased the spring from minispares and attached it between the hole on the ond of the clutch arm and the notch on the slave cylinder.

Did it feel excessively tight putting it on?

Yes very, was quite a job getting it to fit. I'm obviously doing something wrong.

I'm not sure what you mean by the notch on the slave cylinder. On mine there is a little tag on the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder, and the spring hooks over that. There is a similar, but larger, tag on the end of the clutch arm. See items 47 and 48 in this catalogue:

I apparently don't have the tag that goes on the bleed nipple so have probably been over tensioning the spring.
