Engine steadying
I fitted a St 1 kit back in April this year, and whaddya know, the [Cooper freeflow] exhaust manifold has just failed at one of the welded joins!!! Although this explains all the problems Ive been having recently, its gonna be another 60 quid to fix!!! Hope my family & friends dont expect big things for Chrimbo... Anyway, when I phoned our host, they said that the manuf. only offer 6 mo warranty, and that the problem is engine vibration. As I replaced the top steady bar bushes (the one above the flywheel housing) recently, presumably it must be others, somewhere else. I was therefore wondering (if you havent got bored already, reading the above anecdote!) where all the other arms are, and which parts I need to sort them out (bushings, etc). Are there many? And are they reasonably accessible to someone with about 3-ish spanners experience (Haynes)? I have axle stands etc... if you know Part Nrs as well, Id be even more grateful!

Engine steady
What you need is an ultimate engine steady. They are about £18 and are specific to 998 or 1275 they fit between the thermostat housing and the bulkhead where the heater hoses pass through

Engine Steadies
While the Ultimate will prevent a lot of problems, its not the only solution. Replacing a thermostat can be a bit more difficult. First thing to check is that your engine mounts are in good condition - if old/original to the car, might be a good idea to replace them. 21A1902 OR 21A1902ST (same as the other, but with captive nuts) - these are the ones for non-automatic gearboxes. Make sure youre using the small gearbox bracket that the manifold came with, or better yet, install the GEX7337 (pre-rod change) OR the GEX7526 (74 onwards Rod Change)gearbox bracket for downpipe clip. These brackets install using 2 of the gearbox studs, and in my opinion, give better localizing for the manifold clip. Then, install MSSK (R/H) and MSSK001 (L/H) lower stabilizers; these extend from the under the gearbox back to the subframe legs. http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=38370 http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=34151 Best of all, all of these solutions are available from our host! Check out the shop - theres an ENGINE_STABILIZ link in the L/H column.

Id already replyed to this post, I put in a link to MiniSp*rts website so maybe it got removed. Anyway they sell one as do MiniShop London. They are not that good though, I have one and it flexs too much to be any real use.

engine steady
speak to ian at avonbar. his steady bar fits to the water pump, its top quality and is very unobtrusive, there is no great big plate on show as there is with the thermostat housing mounted bars.

the bolt is in a bracket at the back of the engine bay on the left as you look at it from the front. the one on the other end of the steady goes into the engine block. some minis had one on the front of the gearbox underneath aswell. Leonard

Engine steady and head gasket
Hi, Ive got to problems one is that the previous own of my mini (1995 cooper) managed to mistreat it enough to brake the left enginestead bolt in the block thus making the engine bounce around everytime any gas is applied, so anybody any ideas how i can fix it?. The second is i think it needs the head gasket change as there are reports of it running on three and it loses oil and water it needs a rocker cover gasket anyway, now it seems to be quite straight forward but ill get my mate ( a mechanic) to help but is it worth doing this at the same time as fixing the other problem?

steady...
You can get a repair bracket which goes over the broken stud, and you re-mount the arm to this. Not sure where you get them from though - try doing a search on tinternet. The head gasket is straight foward enough on a mini - its the bypass hose youll have fun with! The rocker cover gasket is a two second job, youll need to change it if you take the rocker cover off anyway. Good luck

steady on
Either 2 or 3 as long as its the longer, rearward bolt that bust. If its the front or both thats gone, youll need the much bigger one like the one I got that wraps round the front of the block. Did this break before or after you fitted the second steady?
Posted: Jul 22, 2005 09:28 PM
im not sure what you mean, i need to replace the top engine support because the bolt has broken in the block. I bought the car in the condition with the second engine steady. I thought that this replaced the original engine steady by connecting in a different way.

steady
Oh right. The standard engine steady has a long bolt that goes through the dog bone shape support plus a shorter bolt that goes through the bracket attached to the engine. Sometimes both bolts can shear off. I ask about when the second, additional brace was fitted because the bolt should not have broken with one of these correctly fitted. If it had been fitted before the bolt broke, it may need adjusting to prevent excessive movement. If you have a breather fitted to the clutch housing (looks a bit like a chimney at an angle) then youll need MSSK003, if not, then MSSK002 will fit. Having said that, MSSK0003 with fit either way so is probably the safer bet if youre not sure.

Engine Steadying
Hi John, just a quick question to your suggestion below. I drive an Austin Mini 850. I recently changed my engine to a 1275 injection. Can these gearbox stabilizers fit unto my 1275 injection engine and my Austin Mini 850 front subframe? Thanks in advance. Regards, Gary.
