Wipers
I would check the wiper switch is working, youll need a multimeter to check that when you activate the wiper switch the contacts are closing, if this is ok then it is probably the wiper motor itself. this happened on my 92 cooper and i just replaced the wiper motor with a 2nd hand unit, problem solved! Good Luck Steve

the easiest way ive found to test the wiper switch is at the conection block halfway down the steering column, you can unplug the 2 connectors and then use a continuity tester to check if the switch is working, your gonna need a haynes manual and some patience. you will have to go through the wiring diagrams to find out which wires go where. then check for continuity through the switch. im afraid i dont know of any websites thatll help. As said above, a Haynes manual is a must for wiring diagrams. You would need the dark blue version with the supplements for late models to cover your SPi/Mpi. Question - do the washers not work either? If neither washers or wiper work, it may be the stalk on the steering column, or maybe the pushfit connections have come loose (just under the dashboard by the column).

wipers
Are you using the standard ones or replacement stainless/chrome ones? What is the problem, do they not move, not clear the screen, miss the edges/middle etc. All the info you have will be useful.

some of the cheap chrome wiper kits avaliable are a bit nasty. Im assuming you have the chrome wiper arms plus blades? Some chrome blades iv seen dont follow the curve of the windscreen, hence the missing parts. There are good heavy duty chrome wiper arms avaliable somewhere. They have a stronger spring in them which pushes the blade tighter against the screen. Keep an eye out for them.

Chrome wipers
AFAIK you will always have problems with proper chrome wipers because the chroming process damages the spring in the arms. Basically it makes it much weaker. You can either fit a good non-chromed spring or get stainless wipers or just fit black ones. The blades suffer from the same basic problem too. For a three inch wiper, standard black ones are about as good as it gets :-) A note on wiper blades - never ever use posh, super expencive blades with improved coatings on them. There is a good reason car makers dont fit them and its not to do with cost. The best way to get water of glass, is for the glass and the wipers to be clean. You dont see window cleaners with carbon coated squeegies because the coating leaves a greasy smear behind it. This goes for Rainx and the like too. That stuff may work once or twice, but once it starts to break down you cant see a thing at sunset or at night and its absolute murder to get off.

The problem of smearing and patches that are not wiped properly is normally dur to the sping tension in the wiper arm, the age / quality of the rubber on the blade and the cantilever springs in the blade itself. You may also get patches of the area swept by the blade not being cleaned because the attack angle of the blade to the windscreen is not correct (the mounting to the spindles are different to the original arms / blades. One thing that is often overlooked is the wiper mechanism itself. If the mechanism is unbalanced, there is excessive play in the ball joints etc it can have an effect on the performance of the blades on the screen as they are bolted to the mechanism. Oh - the carbon is actually graphite which is used when quality blades are manufactured during the process after extrusion of the rubber into the shape of the wiper blade to prevent it sticking and the rubber perishing at the high temperates used in the process (graphite is a lubricant). That means quality blades last alot longer than Halfords own etc.

Stainless Wipers (HELP)
Has anyone come across any stainless wipers that work? I have tried both the W&P stainless wipers and the 11 Heavy Duty wipers from here and neither clear the screen (without smearing) ! It appers to me that the best wipers I have ever had are the original Rover wipers, are they availible anywhere in stainless?

SS wipers
I would be interested to know this also. I have the classic car brand ones (come in a clear plastic bag thing) and they miss half the screen. I was thinking of stripping and polishing and laquering the rover arms and blade holder bit. I think this might be the way to go.

ss wipers
I have done that in the past darren! Its ok on the arm itself but the boss that fits onto the the wiper wheel box isnt stainless or chrome!! The heavy duty wipers sold on this site are better at contacting the screen but still not as good as the o/e wipers! I have even tried replacing the wiper rubber for a hallfords refill type which again is an improvement! The biggest problem I have with these wipers is judder!!!!!

smearing wipers
This may not be the fault of the wipers - if your are reqularly washing your car with a wax based shampoo (which i highly recommend) there wil be a wax build up on the wind screen. Next time you wash the car get some hot water and stingly mix some fairly liquid and giove the screen a good wash with that 2 or 3 times, it may help?

Hi, Im sorting out a few niggles on a 1990 Checkmate that Ive recently bought, and have purchased a new indicator stalk, but on removing the original wiper stalk as carefully as possible, guess what - it all fell to bits! Flooded wiper motor
Please can anyone advise me how I can stop the wiper motor from filling up with water and blowing either the fuse or itself up. This is the second one Ive had to replace in 2 years. Thanks.

Try replacing the rubber seal on the rear lip of the bonnet/along the scuttle. Sounds like water is running past it and onto the bulkhead in the engine bay, thus slowly drowning the wiper motor. Also look at the drain channels down the sides of the bonnet formed by the inner/outer wing joint, they may have rotted at the top.

Wiper motor clamp
Hi, Need to replace wiper motor but one of the captive nuts, and screw, in the bulkhead that the clamp is screwed onto has gone missing. Mini Spares dont stock these. Any ideas where I can get replacements? Thanks Rod
